Social work is a field of science which is connected with practical implementation of definite social issues. It includes a wide range of knowledge about the human society; functioning of social institutes and separate individuals each of them being an integral part of the society. Moreover, social work can be defined as personal service to people which is directed on timely exposure and seeking ways of effective solution to emergent problems of an individual, family, group of people or society on the whole. It must be mentioned, that the main goals of the professional activity of any specialist on social work are to: take care of quality of life of individuals (families, society groups and other objects of social work); develop the potential of every person and a lot of others.

The functions of social workers include: social planning and social forecast as far as the human activity in all spheres of life is concerned; analysis and explanation of different social events; global modeling; accomplishment of sociological researches and a lot of others.

Thus, in order to conduct his (or her) social work more successfully and efficiently, a specialist can occupy the position of: director of social structures of different organizations (business companies, medical establishments, educational institutions, tourists’ centers, humanitarian funds etc.); public relations manager (PR manager); manager of social planning department; director of administrative department of a company; executive director (who is in charge with social issues); specialist of employment agency; consultant on social and psychological issues; teacher of sociology and/or social work or others.

In order to illustrate an example of social work, it is important to describe the cooperation of non-governmental organizations (i.e. churches) with the organs of state administration.
As a matter of fact, churches of various confessions conduct and supervise a number of social projects. For instance, churches of Christian confessions work in close cooperation with the Ministry of Health of the USA seeking the ways to stop abortions. Churches of practically all confessions work with the institutions related to the Ministry of Education on the issues of making church schools legal (church school leavers are supposed to be subjected to general certification).

Churches of different confessions take active part in social work. These religious institutions initiate: propaganda of human values and healthy way of life; medical support of individuals who need special care; participation of church representatives in public discussions of draft laws etc.

If you really care about the welfare of people and love helping others, then a career as a social worker may well be in order for you.

A social worker performs various tasks, all that requires that they must genuinely be concerned about the needs of people, such as their emotional needs as well as their physical well-being.

But in order for a person interested in the above profession to do that correctly, they will need the proper training. This means they will have to study for all that is involved in their chosen trade.

First of all, keep in mind that a person studying for social work is required by state labor laws to have a Bachelors degree in Sociology.
And this is one of the major components that will be considered when you are studying to be a social worker. Sociology is the study of the demographics of people and the unique issues that may be faced in a given area, so you’re going to have to learn how to be skilled in this regard.

Another important factor that will be involved in the social work field is the study of psychology. Psychology is the study of mental health and its various complexities. As a social worker, you will dealing with persons who may have serious emotional issues, and you need to know what to do to assist such individuals effectively. You will be required to give sound advice and counsel to individuals and families as to how they can resolve personal or family-related issues.

Some aspects of the above will be related to child nurturing and development. Social workers need to know how to deal with problems and issues related to children.

Other subjects considered will be mathematics as well as political sciences, which will help the student to understand the structure and all the subsidiaries of human goverments as well as the complex issues that such entities face.

So, as you have seen, being a social worker can be a challenging task. Do you think you’re up to it? Do you have the genuine love for people and their problems? Do you know how to deal with such in a dignified and professional manner?

Well, if you are, then you are well on your way to becoming a social worker. And once you receive your bachelors, then you may well be working for the many city-sponsored or govermental-sponsored facilities in your town.

Much success in your quest to be involved in social work.

Are you thinking about a career in social work? It can be very rewarding and fulfilling. Most of the positions are considered professional and require an advanced degree. It is important to have empathy and good boundaries. Salaries are usually in the mid range and can offer a comfortable lifestyle. It is a wide open area and you can find a job almost any where you would like to live. It certainly is worth looking into this career.

Counseling is considered social work. You can open your own practice and choose your own hours. It can be stressful at times, but most professional counselors have the ability to cope with it. There are different areas you can specialize in. Children, teenagers, married couples and families are some of the more popular types of counseling you might be involved in.

It is a big responsibility and not to be taken lightly. They will often have to speak in court and understand the legalities of the social system. Men and woman both find this a interesting job.

Working in the field of special needs is one that some people forget about. Developmental disabilities are on the rise with one in every hundred child having some form of Autism.

Education is the foundation of any professional position and this holds true for Social Work. Luckily, programs to become a social worker are easy to come by with over five hundred Bachelor programs across the United States as well as almost two hundred Masters’ Programs.

Personally, I would narrow the search to one of the hundreds of schools out there that offer a five-year program for the completion of an M.S.W. The task may seem daunting to pick the right program and the right University, but not if your personal interests are strong and you know what to look for. Many sites offer university comparisons that will be helpful in choosing a school that fits your personal interests; however, to find a school to meet your professional needs you’ll have to dig a little deeper.

Check course requirements for each program of interest ensuring you will be fully prepared for the real and challenging world of Social Work with Field Requirements. Other courses to look for will be Foundations, Practice, Human Behavior, Research, Social Welfare, Ethics, and Advanced Practice just to name a few. Of course, you will also need some Administration in Social Work courses to deal the heavy loads of paper work that will pile up on your desk someday.

Additionally, search for programs and specializations that interest you such as children, families, chemical dependence, women, or psychopathology (again, just to name a few). Finally, with degree in hand, you can take your local and state government’s exams for licensure.

Equally significant to your education in the hiring process will be experience! The only way to get experiecne without a degree is volunteer work. If putting in personal time is against your nature than your course has faltered upon even considering Social Work. Local child abuse services, family services, and chemical dependence services will always need volunteers and will happily accept any time you can offer.

Your time will not only help those under your care, but it will also help you gain the needed experience and references to earn work in the crowded field of employment. Other options for volunteer work could be offered through your university if you look for them. Once your education has been completed and your experience fills out a resume, you are ready to for the applications. Search local, state, and federal sites for postings frequently as the turn-over rate is tremendous!
